2022 Wood Buffalo Arctic Winter Games

In March 2022, the Arctic Winter Games - the world's largest circumpolar sporting event - will be returning to the Wood Buffalo region for the first time since 2004. This amazing sporting and cultural festival will feature athletes and officials coming to Fort McMurray from Northern Alberta, Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Greenland, Yamal (Russia), Nunavik (Quebec), Sapmi (Scandinavia).

Athletes will be competing in Alpine Skiing, Archery, Arctic Sports, Badminton, Basketball, Biathlon (Ski and Snowshoe), Curling, Dene Games, Dog Mushing, Figure Skating, Futsal, Gymnastics, Hockey, Nordic Skiing, Short-Track Speedskating, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing, Table Tennis, Volleyball, and Wrestling. 

On top of the sporting competitions, a major arts & cultural festival will be taking place in conjunction with the Games, turning Wood Buffalo into a celebration of northern sport & culture.
