SHELL PLACE

Designed and built to host events of local, provincial, national, and international significance, Shell Place stands as a landmark of innovative and sustainable development. Anchored to the Suncor Community Leisure Centre through a convenient indoor pedway, Shell Place was created with a community focus and presents opportunities to host recreation, sport and concert experiences of every scale.

SMS EQUIPMENT STADIUM

SMS Equipment Stadium, a venue capable of hosting large-scale sport, recreation and concert events is

INDOOR/OUTDOOR SPORT, LEISURE AND RECREATION

Additional indoor and outdoor sport, leisure and recreation amenities will provide new options for local minor sports, as well as year-round youth-oriented sport clinics and tournaments.

Includes opportunities for every member of the community to enjoy the facility and many amenities:

  • The indoor field house is floored with recycled tire turf (same as outdoor field turf) for an authentic off season practice surface for a variety of user groups
  • Indoor field house size is 65 yards x 30 yards (width of football field)
  • The indoor badminton centre has been designed with the badminton enthusiast in mind
  • Badminton centre features a hardwood sprung floor making it suitable for mixed use such as volleyball
  • The Molson Outdoor Rink is sure to become the destination of choice for those wishing to lace up their skates for some fun under the northern lights

COMMUNITY FOCUS – SOCIAL PROFIT SHARED SPACE

  • Shell Place has a dedicated Social Profit Shared Space operated by anchor tenant United Way of Fort McMurray that will serve as the hub for groups providing vital services to the community, including non-profit minor sport organizations

TOTAL ABORIGINAL INTERPRETIVE TRAIL

  • Designed to reflect and share the rich Aboriginal history of the Wood Buffalo region and MacDonald Island, the TOTAL Aboriginal Interpretive Trail will embrace First Nations culture and tradition
  • Home to public art installations including the Sacred Teachings and the Miquwahkesis Project, the interpretive trail will provide new opportunities for education and the enjoyment of the natural beauty of the region.

 BASEBALL/SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT CENTRE

  • The new baseball and softball tournament centre at Shell Place will provide a home for grassroots baseball and softball development as well as hosting capability for events of provincial, national and international significance.
  • The baseball/softball tournament centre has the capacity for 1725 spectators, plus an additional 5500 on the adjacent berm seating

The Athabasca Oil Sands are named after the Athabasca River

The Athabasca Oil Sands are named after the Athabasca River, which cuts through the heart of the deposit. Oil sand deposits are readily observed on the river banks and hydrocarbon flows naturally into the river itself. Historically, aboriginal peoples used bitumen to waterproof canoes.
